The City of Okeechobee and Okeechobee Main Street has opened communications with Amtrak and CSX railroad in hopes of creating a great and beneficial project for Okeechobee. With the increase in fuel prices and the overall increase in travel expenses, this train station will provide a great means for people of Okeechobee to utilize. |

Currently, CSX is considering providing the station to the City of Okeechobee. The details have not been worked out, but this is significant progress from where we were a month ago. Thanks to the City of Okeechobee for stepping in and assisting Okeechobee Main Street with this progress. |

| The preliminary plans are to restore the station to a working station where the community may purchase train tickets and be comfortably seated while waiting on the train. The work is just beginning. We will need funding to assist in the restoration. However, there are many avenues by which grants may be obtained to assist with the restoration expense. Amtrak sponsors such programs under the Great American Train Station Grant Program as well as the State of Florida Historic Preservation. Stay tuned to this website for updates on our progress By the way, we understand that there is an old pot-belly wood stove inside we may be able to restore for those few cold winter days.
