Okeechobee Economic Restructuring Committee
Mark Smith - Chairman

Over the past few months, the Okeechobee Main Street's Economic Restructuring Committee has been interviewing candidates for the executive director position.  It was very important for the project to secure the right person to assist us in leading our community on this venture.  After many interviews, the Committee chose Brian Cartland.  Brian has vast experience in economic development.  His past experiences include opportunities with the Florida Department of Commerce, Senior Economic Development Manager for Sarasota County, Business Development Specialist for Charlotte County just to name a few.

In addition to his job experience, Brian graduated with honors in Economic and International Affairs from Florida State University.  We feel we are fortunate to hire an individual with this type of experience.  Brian starts on September 1, 2009.  Our new office will be located at 315 NW 4th Ave in Okeechobee.

Additionally, we have launched our new website.  Please visit and let us know what you think.  The website address is www.theokedc.com.  We are looking forward to begin bringing economic vitality to our community.  We are in the need of jobs, not just low paying jobs, but jobs which can afford the residents of our community the quality of life they deserve.  While there are some people in our community which feel our efforts will not bear fruit.  We feel time will prove that we can be successful.  It is time for our community to be viewed in the same light as our surrounding counties when site locators are seeking locations for businesses wishing to relocate.

Brian will be introducing a membership plan whereby individuals and small business alike can be part of this effort for as little as $250.00 annually.   There are various other levels of membership available as well.  If you are interested in developing the future of our county, contact Okeechobee Main Street to see how you can be a part of the future.

If you would to view the updated version of the plan which was recently presented to the Board of County Commissioners, please click here
